December 22, 2016, China launched its first Carbon Dioxide Observation Satellite(abbreviation for TanSat or CarbonSat,Tan means "carbon" in Chinese) successfully. The TanSat becomes a new member of the Carbon Dioxide Observation Satellite family after GOSAT of Japan(launched in 2009) and OCO-2 of America (launched in 2014 successfully after OCO-1S failure in 2009).

The TanSat is Chinas first scientific experimental satellite for monitoring the amount of global atmospheric carbon dioxide. The successful development of the TanSat and its subsequent on-orbit stable operation will enable China to initially form monitoring capabilities of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration in China and other key areas even in the global, which can fill the gap in China's greenhouse gas detection technology.
